Hand and Wrist Exercises for Musicians

attention-just-encourages-her:

I realized the other day that, in my 7 years of playing the violin, I was never told to/how to stretch my wrists. I found that after doing these exercises, my wrists are stronger, looser, and free of pain during long practice sessions. These are quick and easy and great for practice breaks!

Praying Position Stretches

While standing, place
palms together in a praying position. Have your elbows touch each other. Your
hands should be in front of your face. Your arms should be touching each other
from the tips of your fingers to your elbows.

With your palms
pressed together, slowly spread your elbows apart. Do this while lowering your
hands to waist height. Stop when your hands are in front of your belly button
or you feel the stretch.

Hold the stretch for
10 to 30 seconds, then repeat.

Extended Arm

·
Extend one arm in
front of you at shoulder height.

·
Keep your palm
down, facing the floor

·
Release your wrist so
that your fingers point downward.

·
With your free hand,
gently grasp your fingers and pull them back toward your body.

·
Hold for 10 to 30
seconds.

To stretch in the
opposite direction:

·
Extend your arm with
your palm facing toward the ceiling.

·
With your free hand,
gently press your fingers down toward the floor.

·
Gently pull your
fingers back toward your body.

·
Hold for 10 to 30
seconds.

Repeat both stretches
with the other arm. You should cycle through stretches two or three times with
each arm.

Clenched Fists

While seated, place
your open hands on your thighs with palms up.

·
Close your hands
slowly into fists. Do not clench too tightly.

·
With your forearms
touching your legs, raise your fists off of your legs and back toward your
body, bending at the wrist.

·
Hold for 10 seconds.

·
Lower your fists and
slowly open your fingers wide.

·
Repeat 10 times.

Building Hand and
Wrist Strength | Building Strength

Building wrist
strength can also help you prevent injury. There are several exercises you can
use to build strength—whether you’re at home or in the office.

Desk Press

·
While seated, place
palms face up under a desk or table.

·
Press upwards against
the bottom of the desk.

·
Hold for five to 10
seconds.

This exercise builds
strength in the muscles that run from your wrists to your inner elbows.

Tennis Ball Squeeze

Squeeze a tennis ball
or stress ball firmly for five to 10 seconds.

This should not be
painful. However, it should allow you to strengthen your wrist.

Thumb Work

Push exercise:

·
Make a fist and point
your thumb up, as if you’re giving a thumbs-up sign.

·
Create resistance with
your thumb and hand muscles to keep your thumb from moving.

·
Gently
pull back on your thumb with your free hand.

·
Hold and repeat.

Pull exercise:

·
Make a fist and point
your thumb up.

·
Create resistance with
your thumb and hand muscles to try and keep your thumb pointing up toward the
ceiling.

·
Use your free hand to
gently push the thumb forward.

·
Hold and repeat.

Figure
Eights

·
Interlace your fingers
in front of your body.

·
Keeping your elbows
tucked into your sides, move your interlaced hands in a figure eight motion.

·
Allow your wrists to
rotate fully so that each hand is alternately on top of the other.

·
Perform this exercise
for 10 to 15 seconds.

·
Rest, and then repeat.

Overhead Reach

·
While seated, lift
your arms over your head and interlace your fingers with palms together.

·
With your fingers
interlaced, turn palms up until they are facing the ceiling. You can keep your
arms slightly bent or straighten them.

·
Hold the stretch.

·
Bring your arms down,
and then repeat.

This exercise stretches
the muscles in the forearms and hands. It also increases flexibility and boosts
circulation.

Eagle
Arms

This exercise is
adapted from eagle pose.

·
Extend your arms
forward, parallel to the floor.

·
Cross your right arm
over your left, with the right arm on top.

·
Bend your elbows.

·
Place your right elbow
into the crook of the left. The backs of your hands should be touching.

·
Move your right arm
right and your left arm left. The thumb of your right hand should pass by the
little finger of your left. Your palms should be facing each other.

·
Press your palms
together, lift your elbows up, and stretch the fingers. They should be pointed
toward the ceiling.

·
Resist the urge to
lift your shoulders as you lift your arms.

·
Hold for 15 to 30
seconds.

·
Repeat on the other side

my boyfriend and I sometimes struggle to be on the same page when it comes to comforting- often i just want to vent and don’t need advice, whereas validation confuses him and he wants a plan of action

to counter this, we’ve come up with a system where we ask: “do you want advice, empathy, both or neither?”

if it’s just advice, i know to go straight to action points and not spend time on fluffy words

if it’s just empathy, he knows i want to be reassured and comforted and that’s all

if it’s both, it’s time for advice that recognises how hard the situation is and is perhaps gentler in nature

if it’s neither, just a hug is really good

i recommend trying to use this in your lives! it makes sure you’re giving and getting what you need, and reduces the risk of resentment or similar

Four rules for a disciplined life

turningtricksbreakingdicks:

a-disciplined-life:

(Credit to reddit user ryans01).

  • No zero days. ‘What’s a zero day? A zero day is when you don’t do a single fucking thing towards whatever dream or goal or want or whatever that you got going on. No more zeros. I’m not saying you gotta bust an essay out everyday, that’s not the point. The point I’m trying to make is that you have to make yourself, promise yourself, that the new SYSTEM you live in is a NON-ZERO system. Didn’t do anything all fucking day and it’s 11:58 PM? Write one sentence. One pushup. Read one page of that chapter. One. Because one is non zero.’
  • Be grateful to the three yous. There’s the past you, the present you, and the future you. If you wanna love someone and have someone love you back, you gotta learn to love yourself, and the 3 you’s are the key. Be GRATEFUL to the past you for the positive things you’ve done. And do favours for the future you like you would for your best bro.’
  • Forgive yourself. ‘Maybe you got all the know-how, money, ability, strength and talent to do whatever is you wanna do. But lets say you still didn’t do it. Now you’re giving yourself shit for not doing what you need to, to be who you want to. Heads up champion, being disappointed in yourself causes you to be less productive. Tried your best to have a nonzero day yesterday and it failed? So what. I forgive you, previous self. I forgive you. But today? Today is a nonzero masterpiece to the best of my ability for future self. This one’s for you, future homes. Forgiveness man, use it. I forgive you. Say it out loud.’
  • Exercise and books.Pretty standard advice but when you exercise daily you actually get smarter. When you exercise you get high from endorphins (thanks body). When you exercise you clear your mind. When you exercise you are doing your future self a huge favour. Exercise is a leg on a three legged stool. Feel me? As for books, almost every fucking thing we’ve all ever thought of, or felt, or gone through, or wanted, or wanted to know how to do, or whatever, has been figured out by someone else. Get some books.’

My friend linked this to me on reddit when I was feeling really down and it changed me. Excellent advice!

SELF HARM HELP

depressionfordays:

If you want to see blood:
Wet the end of a somewhat soft (not crayola) colored pencil and use it on your skin. It works like the food coloring if you don’t have access to that, but also sort of “bleeds”, unlike markers.
Put red food coloring on your skin
Put red food coloring in some non-toxic glue. It looks like blood, and also hardens into “scabs”
Fatal To The Flesh website. Click and drag on your screen and blood appears.

If you want to feel a physical sensation:
Find some ice cubes or anything frozen solid and hold it to where you self harm to give you a numb-burning sensation. Hold it there as long as you can, or until it melts.
Snap a hair elastic or rubber band around your wrist.
Take a hot/cold shower.
Go to the gym, dance, exercise
Chew a piece of ginger root or a hot pepper.
Put tiger balm on the places you want to cut. (Tiger balm is a muscle relaxant cream that induces a tingly sensation. You can find it in most health food stores and vitamin stores.)
Wax your legs/pluck your eyebrows.
Pour some candle wax onto yourself, but make sure you hold it up high enough so that the wax cools a bit before touching your skin. If it starts to feel like you’re burning yourself, stop immediately.

Try T.I.P.:

Temperature change. Dunk your head in ice water (known as the mamillian dive reflex, known to lower heart rates) or hold ice in your hand.

Intense exercise. Try not to go too far with this one. Do ten jumping jacks, run a mile on the treadmill, or do 20 pushups. Just do it until you’re no longer triggered and no more than that.

Progressive muscle relaxation. Tense and relax every muscle in your body one by one. Tense for 10 seconds, take deep breaths, then release.
The self-soothe kit is designed to calm you down whenever you’re upset or triggered. Put things in it that relax you. For example:
body lotion
body butter
lavender shae butter
a scrub
colored pencils
tea
Anything that relaxes you or helps calm you down goes in the kit, such as music, a hobby, art, or calming herbs such as lavender or chamomile. Whenever you’re triggered or upset, take a deep breath and try a few things in the kit.

if you want to see marks on your skin:
Take a red marker or soft felt tipped pen and draw lines where you would self harm
Put on henna, an Indian temporary tattoo-art found at most Indian stores.
Put on some temporary tattoos. Either buy a package of them and apply as instructed, or draw on yourself with a permanent marker and use hairspray to seal it. You can also find suggestions for how to make temporary tattoos here.
On a sketch or photo of yourself, mark in red ink what you want to do.

if you want to pick at your skin:
Put on nail polish, then peel it off.
Put Elmer’s liquid glue on your hands and then peel it off.
Pick at the vinyl liner on the underside of a bottle cap (instructions found here)
If you want a way to let out your emotions:
Pick a song that has meaning for you, and write the lyrics on yourself
Call a friend and talk
Throw an apple/pair of socks against the wall
Have a pillow fight with the wall
Viciously stab an orange
Scream very loudly
Tear apart newspapers, photos, or magazines
Write your feelings on paper then rip it up
Break sticks
The Calm Jar (Fill a mason jar or similar with colored water and glitter. When feeling upset or angry you can shake it to disturb the glitter and focus on that until the glitter settles.)
Cut up fruits
Allow yourself to cry; crying is a healthy release of emotion
Stomp around in heavy shoes
Buy a cheap plate and decorate it with markers, stickers, cut outs from magazines, words, images, what ever that expresses your pain and sadness and when you’re done, smash it. (Please be careful when doing this)
Blow up a balloon and pop it

If you need a way to keep your mind busy:
Say “I’ll self harm in fifteen minutes if I still want to” and keep going for periods of fifteen minutes until the urge fades
Complete something you’ve been putting off
Take up a new hobby
Pick a subject and research it on the web – alternatively, pick something to research and then keep clicking on links, trying to get as far away from the original topic as you can.
Alphabetize your CDs or books
Play computer games or painting programs, such as photoshop
Write out lyrics to your favorite song
Trace your hand on a piece of paper; on your thumb, write something you like to look at; on your index finger, write something you like to touch; on your middle finger, write your favorite scent; on your ring finger, write something you like the taste of; on your pinky finger, write something you like to listen to; on your palm, write something you like about yourself
Play the A-Z game (Pick a category ie. Animals, and think of an animal for every letter of the alphabet)
“See, hear and feel”-5 things, then 4, then 3 and countdown to one which will make you focus on your surroundings and will calm you down
Memorize a poem with meaning
Do school work
Learn to swear in another language
Lay on your back in bed comfortably (eyes closed), and breathe in for 4, hold for 2, out for 4, hold for 2. Make sure to fill your belly up with air, not your chest. If your shoulders are going up, keep working on it. When you’re comfortable breathing, put your hand on your belly and rub up and down in time with your breathing. If your mind wanders to other things, move it back to focusing ONLY on the synchronized movement of your hand and breathing.

If you need a way to keep your hands busy:

why the fuck does english have a word for

but not for “the day after tomorrow”

???

Because you’re not looking hard enough! 😉

Overmorrow = the day after tomorrow

Ereyesterday = the day before yesterday

Example: I defenestrated my brother ereyesterday. I shall defenestrate my sister overmorrow! Because I hate my family and also windows.

english has some of the best examples of stupidly specific words, tbh

Rhotacism (n): excessive use of the letter “R”

Lingible (adj): meant to be licked

Whipjack (n): a beggar, specifically one who is pretending to have been shipwrecked

Yerd (v): to beat with an object with a stick

Roddikin (n): the fourth stomach of a cow or a deer

Balbriggan (n): a type of fine cotton, most often used in underwear

and my personal favorite

Cornobble (v): to slap or beat another person with a fish

This makes the English nerd in me extremely happy.

Who even made these words I’m going to cornobble them

My dick is lingible

there is a dictionary that has all of these stupidly specific and obscure words and a whole lot more. It’s absolutely beautiful.
