Johnny Cash – Hurt (originally by Nine Inch Nails)
His cover of Soundgarden’s Rusty Cage is fantastic too.
Wish You Were Here – Ninja Sex Party (originally by Pink Floyd)
Lovesong – Voltaire (originally by The Cure)
Istanbul (Not Constantinople) — They Might be Giants (originally by The Four Lads)
Summertime – Janis Joplin w/ Big Brother & The Holding Company, also Ella Fitzgerald (originally by George Gershwin)
Holding out for a Hero – Jennifer Saunders (Fairy Godmother-Shrek 2) originally by Bonnie Tyler
Landslide/ Dixie Chicks, originally by stevi nicks
I will always love you || Whitney Houston, originally by Dolly Parton
I forget that it’s not the original
Oh, honey. Today is not the day that we’re coming for Fleetwood Mac or its members–I will not stand for it.
I actually really enjoy the Dixie Chicks’ cover of “Landslide,” but NOTHING compares to hearing the bittersweet lyrics come from Stevie over time. As her voice changed, the song took on an added component of age (“I’m getting older, too” means more when the singer actually is) and the search for wisdom that a one-off cover simply could not approach.
I’m not even going to discuss the Tantric cover.
Oh. Oh. No, god there is no way anyone can top Fleetwood Mac’s original masterpieces. I had to go listen to the Tantric version and while I recognise people have different tastes in music, sorry but it was atrocious.
And Landslide is timeless, no one ever could do it better than Stevie because of the exact reasons @everythings-shiny-captain said.
The thing is, FM and Stevie especially with her voice, altogether they really put their whole soul and spirit into their songs. When you listen to Stevie sing Landslide, you can understand and hear her soul just become one with the music in a way.
As for covers better than originals…
Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn is better than Ednaswap’s original, though Ednaswap’s does have a very nice 90s grunge feel that’s nostalgic. But all the strong guitar really messes with the sound that the vocals are meant to convey.
Soft Cell’s Tainted Love is better than Gloria Jones’ because the 80s fits the song better than the 60s. But the big band sound of the original does have some appeal.
Ike and Tina’s Proud Mary gives the song a powerful fun soul that the song never quite had with its original from Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Streetheart – Under My Thumb
I honestly cannot take the original seriously thanks to it’s meme status, which just made this even more jaw-dropping.
I love the original Sound of Silence.
As a huge Sublime fan and a fan of reggae, I love their renditions of Smoke Two Joints (originally by the Toyes) and 5446 (That’s My Number) by Toots and the Maytals. Though most people haven’t seem to have heard the originals and they absolutely have to.
Also this might come as a surprise to people who follow me but I’m a huge fan of Miley Cyrus when she does country covers. Given who her father is, you know she grew up with this stuff and appreciates how awesome the genre can be.
Since people were talking about Landslide, I know nothing will beat the original but she does a pretty amazing job (though it’s kinda shitty having to listen to all the screaming since it’s a live cover):
Also her cover of Joleen by Dolly Parton is fucking fantastic:
There’s so many to name.
Stuck in the Metal (Stuck in the Middle With You) – Eagles of Death Metal, originally by Stealers Wheel.
All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix Experience, originally by Bob Dylan
With a Little Help from my Friends – Joe Cocker (Especially the woodstock performance of it) , Originally by the Beatles
I know there’s more I love but I can’t think of them. These are my main ones.
7 years-Madilyn Bailey (idk who it’s originally by, but it’s all over the radio)
Originally by Lukas Graham
I think the Gardiner Sisters cover of “God Bless the U.S.A.” is fantastic
Metallica’s “Turn the Page” kicks Bob Seger’s ass
Dolly Parton’s cover of “Stairway to Heaven” is far better than Zep’s original.
Kidz Bop blows Nickleback away on Hero.
(sorry supremes)
I personally prefer Santana’s cover of “Black Magic Woman” over Fleetwood Mac’s version.
i’m so jealous of people who can play piano because you can show off your skills so subtly, like, oh there’s a piano here i’ll tap out a fun song. but with any other instrument it’s like HERE I’LL JUST WHIP OUT MY VIOLA or GOOD THING I BROUGHT MY FRENCH HORN HERE WITH ME
