Things I wish for in the 2nd Brazil game

1. Ash coming up big. She needs some Boss Ass saves, to make it in Rio. Assuming she’s starting.
2. HAO, HAO, HAO, HAO!
3. A Holiday goal would send me sobbing for the rest of the game.
4. Brazil not diving all over the place.
5. Newbies showing what they’re made off.
6. Better calls from the ref…
7. An early goal from the US would be nice.
8. More of the “We got three stars” chant.
9. Players subbed out if they’re struggling/tired.
10. Please let Alex Morgan get a goal.

And obviously

11. US winning the game.

it just hit me.

it just hit me that the 2015 world cup winning team will never play together again.

it just hit me that after 12 years on this team, shannon boxx, a LEGEND, is officially retired.

it just hit me that lori chalupny, after 14 years on this team, is playing her last match in three days.

it just hit me that lauren ‘cheney’ holiday is retiring after just 7 years with the team, because she wants to devote herself to her family.

it just hit me that tobin, lauren, and a-rod will be doing their final pitch jump this sunday.

that every time they were a part of the national team, they did it together.
they won an olympic gold medal together.
they won a world cup together.
each and every time that they played together for the usa, they lined up on the sideline, grabbed each others’ hands, and jumped. together.

it just hit me that more and more young players are starting to get called up to the national team. more and more players who could be just a little younger, a little fitter, a little faster than our favorite players. and they could replace them.

you will always remember how kling, at just five foot two, jumped up like her life depended on it and headed the ball out of the net against sweden.

you will always remember your heartbreak when JJ drew the penalty kick, and how you screamed when it missed the goal.

you will always remember when kelley finally scored her first international goal, in the world cup semifinal. you will always remember the look on her face as she leapt into carli’s arms.

you will always remember where you were the night of the world cup final. you will always remember who you were with when it happened.

you’ll always remember the sound of the commentators yelling when carli lloyd scored not one, not two, but three goals in sixteen minutes. you’ll always remember when she shot from midfield and you looked up and watched the ball hit the post and roll into the net.

you will always remember lauren and tobin’s goals, because you were so proud.

some people may ask why you talk about it so much, or why you know every little detail.

it’s because you never want to forget that night.

the night that twenty-three women became superheroes.

the night they won the world.
