Dear Tumblr:

ohsnix:

Taxes are not that hard. There are always people to walk you through your insurance stuff. Paying bills is pretty self-explanatory.

But in “real life” no one will point out the beauty of John Donne’s use of metaphors or how algorithms work or more importantly, perhaps, how to think critically and find evidence for your claims and how to articulate your thoughts and work with other people who, yes, will let you down but also will challenge and stretch you because they are not like you. Those are the things the world expects you to be ready to do. And those are the things school teaches you.

So stop asking how to do your taxes instead. Everyone uses TurboTax anyway.

As a nurse, particularly one who works the unit of my hospital that takes Influenza patients, I feel it’s my duty to get this out there to everyone I can.  The Influenza vaccine never covers ALL strains; this year there is one that seems to have morphed beyond the vaccine coverage.  It hits HARD, guys.  I had it and was down for two weeks.  This was crawling to my bathroom to pee fatigued and breathing through congestion in my head and chest that choked me.

PLEASE: IF YOU ARE SICK STAY HOME, WASH YOUR HANDS, COVER YOUR COUGH, STAY HYDRATED, AND REST.

Influenza doesn’t respond to antibiotics because it’s a virus, but there is a medication that doctors can prescribe to help lessen the symptoms.  Remember, Influenza is a RESPIRATORY illness, but symptoms can include nausea and diarrhea.  If you have nausea and diarrhea alone, that’s another virus that people call the “stomach flu” called Norovirus/Gastroenteritis, which is also ridiculously contagious and should keep you at home as well.

Here’s the CDC’s information on Influenza, including symptoms, course of illness, and how to manage.  This virus is particularly threatening to small children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised.  I’ve had three patients die from Influenza in the last two weeks.  It’s serious guys.

Signal boost: I had a coworker come into work with it, and now our entire team is sick. He was in our office for about an hour, people. That’s all it takes. If you’re sick, stay home. If someone calls in sick, clean the door handles and work surfaces with the strongest stuff you’ve got and wash YOUR hands often.

You don’t want this.

Signal boost!

please share this so people are aware this toy is NOT SAFE.

Please be very very careful when buying toys for your birds, just because its labelled as a bird toy does not make it safe because unfortunately some companies care more about making money than the welfare of our animals.

Oh shit, I HAVE this toy! I got it from amazon. Maple wont go near it, thank god. And now its going in the trash.

I don’t think healthy people every really get chronic illness.

I have a friend I know from when we were both 6. She is the only person living nearby and so she saw me go from walking through limping to wheelchair on a daily basis. I keep her updated on my health even tho we rarely hang out anymore.
She was gonna come over yesterday and I had to cancel. She asked if I can’t hang out later that day. When I said i won’t feel better later, that if I feel that bad in the morning later will only get worse she got annoyed and “joked” that I’m just finding excuses. And I was surprised, she knows all about me being disabled after all? So, a bit taken aback, I told her it’s a normal thing for me.

“But you got the diagnosis now, aren’t you better?? I thought you’ll get better now”

She was honestly surprised and it made me realize a thing. They don’t get it. They don’t get that getting diagnosed only equals benefits like welfare or parking spot for us, and sometimes better pain meds but that is just like pushing luck. That it’s a forever thing. That that one day we felt good a week ago was just a bright spot and doesn’t mean we won’t need our aids anymore, cause chronic illness is not linear and will make a great comeback in next four hours, and the next good day is planned on when we’re 70.
Cause when abled people are sick, they get better. And our illness is just an excuse for them. And when we say we will never get better they think we’re being dramatic and pessimistic.
And I don’t think they’ll ever get it, cause to get it you need to live it.
And I want my friends to stay healthy and not go through hell.

This is definitely okay to reblog and abled people are encouraged to reblog cause maybe it’ll help others understand

When you broke but you woke

Wait… Guys what?

Is this what you guys think it means when GMO comes up in conversation?

Do you know what else is a GMO?

Dogs. Literally ALL dogs have had their genetics modified to make them more docile, loyal, trusting, energetic, obedient ect.

Ears of corn used to be the size of your thumb. Through selective ‘breeding’ we chose the strains of corn that were the biggest, fastest growing, most resilient ect. Ect.

THAT is a GMO. I don’t know where the idea that genetic modification meant they’re injecting your food stuffs with chemicals to change its DNA. That’s not how it works.

However, they ARE spraying your veggies with pesticides and that is something you should be worried about.

Companies like Monsanto are evil. But not because they are breeding crops to feed more people. But because they’re monopolizing the farming market, sueing farmers who share a geographic area and have some of the same strains of crops in their fields because of unavoidable cross pollination and lying about their business practices.

image

This is Normal Borlaug. In 1942 he received his Ph. D in plant pathology and genetics. In Mexico, he developed semi-dwarf, high-yield, disease resistant varieties of wheat. A genetically modified food. He introduced these to Mexico, Pakistan and India, resulting in double the wheat yields in a 5 year span. In 1970, Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, for saving one billion lives from starvation, and contributing to world peace through increasing the world food supply.

Genetically modified food is great.

This, a thousand fucking times this. Privilege is spouting and spreading pseudo-science bullshit you saw on your Facebook feed or on Twitter because unlike people in drought and famine prone areas of the world, you have the option to do just that. Those other parts of the world that don’t have the benefit of a food surplus and can’t pick and choose what they eat depend on GMOs to not die of starvation or watch their children waste away.

I despise Monsanto as much as the next person and if they ever go out of business, I’ll be the first to dance a jig, but condemning GMOs just because one megacorp is a pile of shitbags is beyond idiotic. If scientists can create new strains of seeds that can withstand disease, pests, all while yielding more foodstuff, then we should be throwing our support behind them.

Also, “They are feeding us chemicals!” is a fundamentally ridiculous statement.

Why?

As a chemist, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret:

Everything is chemicals.

Anti-gmo rhetoric and reasoning is based more on lack of understanding in science and strange doomsday scenarios than proper scientific reasoning and empirical evidence.

@ 14 year old side of tumblr

Please stop giving away so much personal information about yourself.

It doesnt seem like it but your blog is visited by hundreds of people with hundreds of different intentions weekly (or hell daily if ur a popular blogger). And posting your height, age, gender, privileges, all of your triggers, gives away a lot of information that you may regret posting later on.

The internet is a very scary place. Full of people who could do you harm with that sort of information.

You all have to understand that nothing on the internet is ever truly deleted or gone. So you REALLY have to be careful about what you post and say.

A lot of you are keen to posting opinions online and as we all know on the internet opinions are going to anger a lot of people.

People could potentially track and harass you. It is a very dangerous world full of messed up people. And as minors you should all be very wary of who you trust online and think twice before you post something. Just posting “please dont follow if youre _____” isnt going to help from that.

ALSO

@ 14 year old side of Tumblr

Please stop posting your skype address.

I know it’s tempting to make new friends. And I know that faceless people are easier to talk to. But it’s dangerous. And we’re not trying to parent or berate you. We just want you to be safe.

Trust me.

Down the road you’re gonna realize you made a lot of dumb mistakes trying to be friends with the world. The world isn’t made of all friendly people. And I truly adore your optimism. I’m the same way.

But I’d rather you learn in a safe setting then after putting yourself in harms way.

Love,

the 21 year old side of Tumblr.

Signal boosting the hell out of this.

Protecting your privacy is a learned skill. It doesn’t come naturally, particularly on a media designed to allow you to connect with others. And we all want to connect with others.

But it’s an important skill. Gain awareness early, make good choices, do not put yourself in a position where days, months, years, or decades down the line someone will use your own data against you.

This is not about stranger danger, this is not about the older tumblr generation “not getting it” and adopting a helicopter parenting approach to their younger tumblr siblings’ online shenanigans.

This is about the older generation having experienced rapid changes in technology first hand and knowing that none of us can know what to expect next, that none of us can predict what uses people, businesses and governments will come up with next for your data.

We don’t know. You don’t know. And in many cases, they don’t know. Yet.

Look up the term “precautionary principle” on Wikipedia and aim to apply it. Protect your data, protect yourself, protect your future self.

For any of my younger followers.

And another big thing.  The fact that you mutually follow each other means nothing.  By all means talk to people but you’re NOT automatically friends.  They’ve done nothing to earn your trust and you don’t know what they actually want.  Don’t assume that everyone is automatically good and trustworthy.

I need all of my followers to see this. I don’t want y’all hurt.
