Eva Carneiro has decided to leave Chelsea. This is sad and disappointing, not for her, but for football. Women are scarce in the forefront of the sport, particularly in the medical arena. She is just as qualified and competent as her male counterparts. She was just as trusted by the players she treats. Eva was not only verbally abused on a public stage, but the media and some fans also provided undue scrutiny.

People are saying “oh this isn’t a sexism issue”. Actually, it is. When your manager says “even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game”, it is an issue of sexism. Would that have been said to a man? No. Eva has been around football for several years, but nah, she just watches football, almost everyday, while day-dreaming about makeup and Chris Evans.

Eva is an example for young, aspiring female sports doctors. I’m glad she left Chelsea. I’m glad she stood up for herself. I’m glad she didn’t tolerate disrespect. I only hope she enters the public eye again, because she is a role model to women in sports medicine. We need more Eva Carneiros.
